Russian developer rolls out new robot to police crowded places

24 November 2021

The Russian manufacturer of service robots Promobot has presented a new version of the police robot. The event took place on November 23, 2021 as part of a working visit of representatives of the Ministry of Internal Affairs to Promobot.

Robot Promobot V. 4 is able to recognize faces and speech, communicate with people, move autonomously, avoiding obstacles. The new robot police officer can help police officers in crowded places: at the request of the officer, the droid will be able to scan fingerprints and display available information about a person, if he is in the database of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. This will make the recognition process easier and faster.

As updates, in addition to recognizing and intruders and scanning fingerprints, the developers “taught” the robot to recognize weapons. Especially for this project, the developers equipped the robot with an additional camera for recognizing objects, and also collected a dataset of more than 1000 images of weapons, which made it possible to create a neural network for recognizing machine guns, pistols and other types of weapons. This functionality can be useful in crowded places and educational institutions.

“If the recognized face matches the face from the wanted database, then in the background the robot reports the person’s name, time and place of detection. Robots are not yet entitled to independently carry out operational actions, so our promobot will become an assistant to a “live” police officer in crowded places: at airports, metro, at public events,” said Oleg Kivokurtsev, Development Director of Promobot.

In addition, the robot’s duties include patrolling, video surveillance of employees and visitors to facilities, and law enforcement. The robot can communicate in Russian and English.

The robot is also equipped with obstacle sensors developed by Promobot engineers. With the help of sensors, the robot can freely move and patrol objects, avoiding obstacles, and a non-contact thermometer allows the robot to monitor the temperature of students and visitors to educational institutions.

With the help of the robot, police officers will also be able to quickly enter law and order violators into the database of the Ministry of Internal Affairs: the robot is equipped with a passport scanner, a fingerprint scanner and a photo camera.
