Law on Free Access to Socially Significant Websites Comes into Force in Russia

02 December 2021

The law obliging telecom operators to provide free access to sites within the framework of the “Accessible Internet” project has come into force.

The final list of resources has not yet been established, but since April last year, operators have provided free access to 371 sites, including Gosuslugi government service, sites of government agencies and TV channels.

Earlier, the Ministry of Digital Science has updated the requirements for such sites. In particular, they will transmit video in 480p resolution. At the same time, they will be prohibited from downloading information from foreign resources and organizing the possibility of voice and video calls, as well as audio and video messages.

The Accessible Internet project was initiated by Russian President Vladimir Putin in 2020.
